When I looked back to my first blog post we were asked to discuss how we will be teaching, I had no clue what I was going to be doing as a teacher or how I would be teaching my students. I know I wanted to be a hands-on teacher and to use the iPads and Smart-boards but I really didn't know what I was talking about. Now, I have a better understanding as to what I want to do and how to answer those questions. I can now really incorporate technology into my classroom because I understand more of the tools out there that I can use to help me become a better teacher and help my students to the best of their abilities. Any grade can use technology.
A big thing I will do in my classroom is blogging. I think it builds the students self-confidence and they can gain so much from it. They are working on their writing skills while communicating with people from all over the world. They develop social skills and they will be able to create a personal learning network where everything they like will be right in front of them and they can use for the rest of their lives.
My PLN has grown a lot throughout this semester. And I personally believe that it will be beneficial for my students later on and throughout their lives. I learned just how effective they can truly be because I had never heard of a PLN till this class.

Changes

It is hard to say what I would change from my very first blog post. I could have done some research and looked around to decide how I really wanted to teach. I will most definitely be using technology in my classroom as much as possible. I would try to do project-based learning as well instead of using Burp-Back education because I want my students to thrive and be independent little learners! I'm more ready to be in a classroom now because of this class and what it has showed me. I can use anything to help myself out and better my students and that is all I want!
My name is Chase. I am 14 yrs old and in eighth grade. I have lived in Iowa, USA for eleven years. I enjoy doing sports, reading, hanging out with friends, and school is pretty good too. My favorite subject in school is History . I spend my free time doing video games or playing sports. I have one dog. She is six months old and her name is Molly. She is very hyper.I travel about three times a year to Nebraska to visit my family. When I grow up I want to be a professional football player. Not the round kind of football. The egg type shaped ball. Do you have any pets?

Hey Chase! I have a friend who lives up in Iowa as well. He lives in Cedar Falls. I bet it still really cold up there! I live in Alabama right by the Gulf. What kind of dog do you have? I have a Morkie which is a Maltese/Yorkie and she’s only 7 months old. I also have a Westie. The dog that’s on the caeser commercials and his name is Herbie. We named him after the Husker’s mascot! Good luck on becoming a professional football player!
Hi I am a fourth grade student in Bellevue, Nebraska. Did you know that the Henry Doorly Zoo has the biggest desert dome and indoor rainforest in the world. Also we don’t have any major sports but in Omaha, Nebraska they host the college World Series. We have a under water lake that is huge wich is called the ogallala Aquifer. The animals that live here are the Sandhill cranes, turkeys, deer, western meadow lark, and buffalo. Of course those animals are all wild and I could name a ton of domesticated animals like the dog or cat. Did you know that we invented Arbor Day in Nebraska. Now that you know about Nebraska why don’t you tell me about where you live?

Hey Luke! I actually have family that lives in Grand Island. Is that close to you? My dad is also a huge fan of the Huskers. I didn’t know that Arbor Day started in Nebraska! That is really cool. I live in Spanish Fort, Alabama. I only live about 30 minutes or so from the Gulf of Mexico. I don’t really know any cool facts about Alabama because I’ve only lived here a few years. The main thing we are known for is football. I’m sure you heard of the University of Alabama and Auburn! I loved reading your post. Keep up the great work!
My two week Easter Holidays

Hi guys we’ve been doing some writing about my two week break.

We had to write It down on a A3 piece of paper, so just to share here is my work.

MY HOLIDAYS
Easter
At the start of Easter I was amazed at how many Easter eggs were on the floor even in cupboards, me my brother and my mum decided to have
a Easter egg hunt. I found a lot of eggs, I found the mother load of eggs in the garage.

Shopping

When I woke up I realized there hardly any food at all so I told mum if we could
Shopping we went to the long way to the shop because the short way had traffic
We had to get a lot of things like pet food.

I am focusing on putting more punctuation in my writing.

Hey Kyle! That’s great you had an awesome Easter! My Easter we went to church and me and my family went out to lunch on the beach. I had a wonderful holiday because I got to spend it with my family. I also think it’s great you are trying to work on your punctuation. Keep up the good work!

My PLN has grown quite a lot since I started it! I have been exploring how to use Symbaloo more and how to use myHomework. I also added a few resources to my PLN: Quizlet, WolframAlpha, and along with personal likings! I only expect it to continue growing so I can use it to help me in the future with teaching!:)
He talks about how you blend the classroom, mobile online combined with engaging, exploring, explaining, expanding and evaluating with the students. The learning cycle starts off with asking a good question.. Then you go investigate that question. You watch a video and then elaborate. Review it with the teacher and then take a summary quiz to make sure the student understands what you were teaching them. I like the idea of a blended learning classroom. I will definitely try it in my classroom because it seems like an effective tool to make sure the students understand and comprehend the subject you were teaching them. He did this for his AP biology class in high school, while I will be teaching elementary students, so I will most likely have to tweak it for that grade level. Hopefully, it will be effective in my classroom just like it has been in Mr. Anderson's classroom.
My major is elementary and special education. I think a great blog post assignment that we didn't do this semester would be to research something that has to do with special education. Whether it be a lesson plan you have to create for the special needs students. Or going to visit with special needs students and then writing about their experiences. Even researching different mental disabilities in depth so people who read your post can better understand special needs.

A lesson plan you can do is talking about the alphabet. You can bring in items that they can see, smell, touch that goes with each letter of the alphabet. There is also this YouTube video called Jolly Songs A-Z that pronounces each letter and has a little dance and song to go with each letter.
If she is able to use technology throughout her whole classroom then I think teachers everywhere should give it a try. It won't hurt anything. Technology is very useful and I think showing students how to use and to show them they learn things from different cultures or tradition or where they can talk to people from around the world, they will be more excited to learn! We shouldn't solely rely on technology in a classroom because my biggest fear is that I don't want it to disable certain people skills. The students need to know how to hand-write things and not to type everything and also to spell check things on their own. The students in her classroom were learning to blog, Skype and collaborating which I think is very awesome! They are using their technology for educational purposes, like playing learning activities online. Honestly, it shows the students learning can be very fun! I hope one day in my classroom I can use some of her techniques to teach my students to blog and Skype and using the internet as a resource!

As we continue to explore the rich world of authentic student blogging, it is important to stop and listen to feedback and criticism from time to time. It is important to understand the apprehension that some stakeholders may have when it comes to open online publishing.

You can read more about how we have been blogging with our middle school students by reading some of these post, but let me give a very brief synopsis of what our program looks like up to know. (Before I start, let me clarify that when I say we, I am referring to myself and Paula Guinto who is my teaching partner in grade 7 & 8. We both teach English; I blog here with my students and Paula writes at Meta.)

The basic manifesto as it stands, looks something like this:

I want my students to feel confident about who they are through critical and artistic exploration of their identity. I want them to learn how to clearly articulate this voice in a variety of media in order to find a network of like-minded people in order to create a community of learners that will help them learn during and beyond school.

We hope that blogging will help our students achieve this goal. The system we have set up is pretty simple: We coached every student in our class to set up a blog through blogger, explained basic etiquette and gave them freedom to own the space. We are not formally assessing anything that goes on the blog, and there is no obligation to blog at all. We are hoping to see what kids write when they are given a space and freedom to write.

Like any process at a school, there have been mixed feelings from students, teachers and parents. There have been some accurate criticism and others based on misunderstandings. As a community, we are in the process of figuring out what blogging looks like for us. We are looking to make sure that there is a clear understanding of the what and the why and the how by all the stakeholders involved.

As part of this process, I asked my students to write a short paragraph agreeing or disagreeing with this statement:

Blogging is an important part of an English classroom.

I was floored by the results. You can read all of the answers here, but let me give you some highlights:

The freedom to express ourselves is important; providing a medium and nurturing the usage of that medium improves our skills as writers and removes some of our inhibitions of writing.

Blogging is a fun way to write. It can be used for educational purposes and it also helps the student to think when they are writing “who is my audience.” Sometimes having students writing on a blog will increase a students motivation to write.

Blogging is useful. No scratch that out, Blogging is necessary. With teenagers [us] being young minds full of innovative ideas, thoughts and views, our generation needs to share them to audience and blogging enables us to do that.

It wasn’t all positive, many students had valid concerns:

Some people don’t like having their personal thoughts online because it is a public space.

The notion of writing online to a worldwide audience was not quite thrilling.

Expecting a bunch of insecure teenagers who aren’t quite sure who they can trust in the constantly moving sands of social media to write about whatever comes to their mind is asking for a lot.

Sometimes people are not able to get the time to read the blog posts with all the homework we are currently getting.

I hope you get a chance to read all of the response and maybe add some thoughts in the comments on our class page. But what does this all mean? What did I learn?

The fact that we have chosen not to force students to blog has been invaluable, however, there is still a pressure to share and this is making some kids uncomfortable. There is a lot involved in this process: from self-esteem, to trust, to community. The notion of sharing publicly is still a major hurdle for many students and their parents. What is the point? What are the benefits? What are the problems and the issues? I am not sure if this post is designed to answer questions. I was hoping to ask some and have you, dear reader, answer a them. What are the benefits of public sharing for students? Why go global?

I also noticed that many of the students might be blogging more if there was more structure. The total freedom, seems to have frozen some kids into inaction. They simply don’t know what to write, when they are told they can write about anything. This has me thinking of designing lessons or activities that guide students to come up with ideas. Which is interesting, because one of the questions that comes up repeatedly during reading conferences is, “How does the writer come up with ideas for his/her stories.” It is clear that middle school kids need a pool of ideas and/or prompts to get them started. Sites like this and this are great, but perhaps kids need more of a push toward them. How do you help students find things to write about? How can we foster creativity and imagination?

Ironically, many of the students who are not blogging, said they are not writing because it is not graded or part of school, so they don’t have time to waste on it. Which makes me wonder if they would write more if I forced them and graded it, which leads us back to square one that school writing is not always authentic. Or is it? How do we find this balance of what is expected and graded and what is free of choice? Still struggling with that one. How much of this is explicitly for school and how much is bigger than school? Hoping to have a good conversation about this idea of academic relevance in the comments. It is a major talking point at our school at the moment? How do we assess this stuff? Should we?

It was great to see so many students make the connections between Voice, Trust, Writing and Community, because these themes are at the heart of what we do. This is the culture we are trying to create; one where students feel comfortable and safe enough with their peers to be able to share their ideas regardless of their writing “level.”

We have a long way to go, but I feel pretty good about where we are after only six months. Cultures take time to build, and we need to be cognizant of the people they affect. We have to stop and ask stakeholders what they are thinking, how they are feeling.

Next step for us, is to ask parents to articulate what they know about blogging. Ask them what they value and what they fear. It is an intimidating conversation to have, but an important one. Perhaps, showing them what their kids are saying would be a good first step.

Blogging should be started early so that way they get a better sense of what to do and how to express themselves. I am a Junior at South Alabama for elementary and special education and this is the first time I have ever had to do a blog or even considered doing one. I realized how beneficially it is for myself personally. He gives us blog posts, projects, comments and activities we have to do each week. It honestly makes me really think because everything we have to do is related to teaching and what I will be doing in my future classes. No one is telling their students that they have to put private information on there. But it is a way for them the express themselves and get excited about how anyone around the world can read what they have to say and that those people are actually interested in what they have to say. They can share ideas with one another and gain insight on other’s opinions. I mean isn’t that what we want our students or children to do? To grow and develop and become their own person. I think it is a great thing to do and I will most likely be using blogging in my future classroom.
I recently co-presented a workshop with an educator who is very different from me. She is both experienced and knowledgeable, but our beliefs about teaching and learning don’t coincide, so the planning process involved much disagreement and compromise.

According to the dictionary:

Collaboration is ‘working together’, but is ‘working together’ necessarily collaboration? Or does true collaboration require specific conditions?

It’s a starting point for a central idea for a new inquiry unit in How We Express Ourselves and no-one in the room is excited. The draft central idea seems like a statement of the obvious and teachers are concerned that it might not have the potential to invite student inquiry. We can see opportunities for the development of skills and outcomes in our English scope and sequence, exposure to Aboriginal culture, obvious links with second language learning and wonderful ways to incorporate the arts. If we can come up with possible directions and some great provocations, we’ll be happy to let the learners lead the way…

… Inquiry teachers are not afraid to let go.

It’s the pre-thinking stage and we have yet to explore the potential by investing some time in our own inquiries. An interesting way to provoke initial thinking is via google images. A quick search for ‘language’ generates pictures of different kinds of scripts, people communicating, sign language charts, ancient writing, translations, symbols and signs. We’re off on our own tangents, considering different perspectives, exploring in different directions. My personal inquiry has already taken me to Steven Pinker, Mark Pagel and the National Geographic Enduring Voices project…

… Inquiry teachers are inquirers themselves.

The range of questions teachers generate themselves is an indication of what’s possible… What is language? How can we communicate without language? How do writers use language effectively? How is spoken language different from written language? How would the world be different if everyone spoke the same language? How has language evolved over time? How does slang develop and evolve? How does body language impact on communication? How do gestures communicate meaning in different cultures? Why do some languages not have words for concepts we have in English? How does language shape culture? How does culture shape language? Why are many languages becoming extinct?

… Inquiry teachers are more interested in questions than answers.

We consider the conceptual focus. We might explore language through the lenses of function, connection and change. The big ideas (related concepts) might include communication, expression, culture, systems, relationships, adaptation, literature…

Hi my name is Brittany Haub and I am a student at the University of South Alabama and this is for my EDM 310 class. I like what Holli H said. An experiment like that would be awesome to do and to see the results would be very interesting. I think having a mini lesson on multi-cultures would be very beneficial for students to see how other people act around the world and to see how they communicate with their body and how they speak.

Hi Kylie! I completely agree with what you said!I love talking to people that I never would have if it wouldn’t have been for blogging. I mean I live in Alabama and you live in Iowa! It is definitely not a waste of time because you can learn about things you never thought possible and learn everyone’s opinions about different things.
Keep up the good work!
Larry and Tracy are very inspiring people. It amazed me how intelligent they were, even when they were doing some strange behaviors. For example Larry was speaking gibberish out of his mouth but typing very intelligent words at the same time. Just thinking about how frustrating it would be to be so smart, but unable to convey what they were thinking. It makes me feel very happy for them that they now have a means of communicating through typing. I am also very happy for Larry that he got some of his art into a museum. In conclusion I think that Tracy and Larry should continue helping the world.

Hey Sam! I really enjoyed reading this post about Larry and Tracy. Is this a book or story you had to read for school? Also, what was wrong with them that they had to communicate through typing? Keep up the good work!

I didn't get this at first until I read through the comments of what John T. Spencer and other people had said and then I finally got it! Papermate pencils are affordable and cheap while the Ticonderoga (which I have never heard of till now) is a better pencil but more expensive. He was comparing these pencils to PC's and Mac computers. He was basically saying you might as well go for the more expensive kind because the more affordable PC's will break down and you'll have to pay to repair them so you might as well go for a Mac.
Why Were Your Kids Playing Games?

Another post from John T. Spencer talks about a conversation he had with his supervisor about "playing games" when they should have been learning memorization skills. He even states that "They were reading as well. They had to read various scenarios and describe their solutions in a text. It was real interactive and the kids were engaged" In the end, he talked his supervisor into allowing them to play an algorithm factory game to prove what he is doing helps the students. I didn't like the principals attitude about games. I know that I learned much better with hands-on activities and games. You have to make sure your interacting the students or they either won't learn or won't pay attention to you while you were teaching. There is many kinds of games for each kind of learning for example: memorization games, simulation games and so on. You can learn and still have fun and that's what helped me learn the most!

In his most recent post, Scott McLeod acts very opposing to having any kind of technology in the classroom. No computers, tablets, iPads, phones because he states in his "argument" that children can't be trusted with technology. He says that the students would be too busy sexting, cyber-bullying or looking up porn before doing their homework or assignments. To some degree he is right, but I believe if the students are taught from an early age about the dangers and the pros and cons of technology, they will learn to use it properly.

Coming into Dr. Strange's classroom, I knew technology was a big deal but growing up, my teachers hardly used technology so I had no plans of using technology in my classroom. I've realized now that technology is an important part in a classroom and should be used but not relying on technology 100%. I know what I have learned will be beneficial for me and for my classroom in the future.

I learned from Mr. McClung's reflective blog post Version 4 post (2011-2012) is that you can't fret over others opinions on how they think you teach. You need to do everything to the best of your ability and to succeed as a teacher you need to worry about your students and that is it. Your students are your main priority and you need to focus on how to be the best teacher possible for them. He is exactly right when he says "Worrying about perception of adults has never done anything positive for me, but making sure that my kids are taken care of and enjoying class has done wonders for me. As long as I stick to this rule and remember who I really work for then I should never divert down the wrong path." I couldn't have said it better myself. You don't work for your peers, you work for your students.

In Mr. McClung's blog post What I Learned This Year (2010-2011) was very inspiring. He is most definitely trying to give advice to future teachers so they don't make the same mistakes he has made. Like I said before, students are our primary focus and nothing needs to take our attention from that. YOU make your own rules. You don't always need to fit in, you just need to be yourself and worry about you and your students. Not about what others think about you. I agree with him saying that we can't take over the tasks the students are doing because they won't learn a thing. They'll struggle but in the end they will get it! Always, always try to change things up. You want to be comfortable but not to comfortable as to doing the same things over and over again. Like he says "The teaching profession needs individuals that are passionate and willing to exceed the demands of the traditional 8-3 teaching format...is this not an achievable goal?" And that is exactly what I intend to do. They need teachers nowadays who will work before 8 and after 3 to help their students succeed in all of their abilities.
Hi! My name is Brittany Haub and I am in EDM310 class here at the University of South Alabama. My major is Elementary and Special Education. I am truly inspired by what you said. Your photographs are breathtaking. There is no way you can write a song, story, or a poem on just one of these photos. Each one tells a different tale. If I could I would write one on each photo. When I become a teacher, I will for surely be using this idea. It will really open their up creativity and their minds to use their imaginations. Thank you for sharing this idea with the rest of the world. My blog is haubbrittanyed310.blogspot.com.

For my PLN I chose to use Symbaloo. I have organized mine into several groups. I have a social networking group, an educational group, and a group for my favorite stores I shop at. I can't wait to keep adding tiles to my Symbaloo! This tool will definitely help me in my future classes at South and when I have my own classroom in the future.Brittany Haubhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10069414897492069779noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1963279926219823034.post-11021588642429594022013-03-03T20:49:00.001-06:002013-03-03T20:49:22.839-06:00Blog Post #7I really enjoyed watching Randy Pausch Last Lecture: Achieving Your Childhood Dreams. My favorite aspect probably was how Randy's enthusiasm was for life. He was so full of life and for pursuing your dreams. He most definitely loved life and was living it each and everyday unlike most people in America. After all, he did achieve most of his childhood dreams. What I took from this video is that we should all pursue the goals we set for ourselves. If we don't, one day we will regret not trying.

There is quite a few things from Randy Pausch's lecture that I will be using in my classroom. The majority of his lecture was talking about pursuing your childhood dreams and to never give up. One of his dreams was to become a Disney Imagineer, which he achieved after running into a few brick walls. He never gave up on his dream and helped creative the virtual world of Aladdin.

I plan on teaching with positivity and an open mind for everything from the students and even the parents or guardians. I know deep down as an educator, you need to make sure the students goals are possible for them and to show them that they don't ever need to give up on something worth pursuing. I will give as much advice and help my students out as much as possible with their goals. Every child deserves a chance to succeed in their own way. We aren't doing any good for our students if we set a bar for them to achieve, we must be willing to aim beyond the limits because what we may see as limits, someone else sees as an opportunity.

In Wendy Drexler's video she shows a story of a high-school student applying networked learning in this century. She rarely has a lecture, and the class only meets three times a week with two days online. The student is pretty much teaching hisself or herself the material, while the teacher is there in case they have questions that need to be answered or guidance.

I completely agree with what she is doing. Teachers should be teaching how to use these skills in the 21st century rather than teaching the information. Students use technology each and every day and if you show them the tools to use with guidance and practice with someone from experience, this will allow them to fully understand and learn what technology can do for them and also learn the skills to get there.

I have definitely learned a lot using my blog early on in this semester already. These are skills you can use for the rest of your life because technology grows each and every day. I really would love to use these tools in my future classroom. Although, I will be teaching elementary students so I would have to change it some, but I know it would be very beneficial for them in the future.
If I Built A School

Mrs. Venosdale's dream school would b very creative and different from the normal schools. Her school would truly interest the students. They would want to learn not because they have to. Having science labs more often would help the students who learn better with hands on learning. More field trips would build the kids excitement for learning. Mrs. Venosdale's school would unleash students' creativity which is often suppressed.

If I could open my own school. It would be loosely based on the stereotypical elementary school. I would assign homework once a week and have a test once a week, but to only see how well the teachers are conveying the material to the students and how well the students are grasping the information presented. Every week there would be hands on activities on the material regardless of the subject because I believe that helps the learning process immensely. The students and the facility would do fundraisers that would benefit the community around them while at the same time raising money for field trips so the students can learn how important the community is and be rewarded with educational field trips. The school would also be very colorful to prevent any kids from being discouraged at school.

Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir

I think the virtual choir is a great use of the internet's resources that it has to offer. It is sometimes overlooked what you accomplish with the combination of people and technology, but as Eric Whitaker demonstrated you can create something beautiful out of it.

Teaching in the 21st Century

Kevin Roberts believes teaching in the 21st century should be technology orientated. Students should be taught how to use the technological resources they have at hand. I feel as though some of the opinions expressed are correct that technology is steadily growing and becoming a larger and larger part of education, but I don't think my career as a teacher will be affected because there is always going to be a demand for teachers regardless of the amount of technology. Technology might began to take affect teachers as a career but it won't be for a while.

Flipped Classroom

I would use flipped classroom approach in my teaching but only for students that I feel are old enough and responsible enough to watch the lectures at home and do the work. The flipped teaching method is no different from a hybrid class in college You do some of the work at home and get a basic understanding of It then come into class with your questions. Flipping the classroom just perfects this method by separating into groups so the teacher can teach each group to their certain needs. Using this method would allow for a lot more time for personalized teaching. If the students do their required computer work at home I think it is an excellent idea.
My comment: My name is Brittany. My class blog http://edm310.blogspot.com/. My personal blog is http://haubbrittanyedm310.blogspot.com. I will be summarizing my visits to your blog with a post on my blog! I thought your most recent post about PDF file conversion will be very helpful to those who read it. I didn't personally try them out but I clicked on each link to see what they each looked like. They seemed very easy to use and straight forward on what to do from what I saw.
